So, this post is a compilation of research that modern science did to test and finally validated what our forefather found and set rituals in a way that this grass remains protected in India.
Kusha grass, scientifically known as Desmostachya bipinnata (L.) Stapf is a perennial grass belonging to the Poaceae family. While traditionally valued for its spiritual significance in Hindu rituals, modern scientific research has validated several therapeutic properties of this remarkable plant.
Desmostachya bipinnata is native to the northeast and western tropical regions, and northern Africa, countries in the Middle East, and temperate and tropical Asia, including Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.
Validated Scientific Facts : Kusha Grass Benefits
1. Antioxidant Properties
One of the most well-documented benefits of kusha grass is its potent antioxidant activity. Scientific studies have demonstrated that the hydroalcoholic extract of Desmostachya bipinnata shows significant antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 value of 264.18 ± 3.47 μg/mL in H2O2 scavenging assay.
The extract prevented oxidative damage to DNA in the presence of DNA damaging agents (Fenton’s reagent) at a concentration of 50 μg/mL. This DNA protection activity suggests potential applications in preventing age-related diseases and cellular damage caused by free radicals.

2. Antimicrobial Activity
Kusha grass exhibits significant antimicrobial properties against various pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Pharmacological studies have established antimicrobial activity and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Plant root extracts showed moderate antibacterial activities (zone of inhibition: 6-9mm) when compared with standard kanamycin, while extracts showed positive antifungal activities (zone of inhibition: 6-12 mm) with fluconazole used as a standard antifungal agent.

3. Anti-Helicobacter pylori Activity
Research has shown promising results against Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. The diethyl ether extract showed 75% growth inhibition of clinical isolates of H. pylori, demonstrating high count reduction at different concentrations (2xMIC, MIC & ½ MIC) compared with untreated controls.
The non-toxic nature of Desmostachya bipinnata ethanol extract in acute toxicity studies is well supported by biochemical data following 35 consecutive days of oral administration to rats at a dose of 500 mg/kg, showing no significant effects on liver or kidney function.

4. Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects of Kusha Grass
Scientific studies have validated the traditional use of kusha grass for pain and inflammation management. Analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects of petroleum ether, benzene chloroform, ethanol and aqueous extracts of the whole parts of Desmostachya bipinnata Stapf were investigated in albino rats.
Pharmacological studies revealed that the plant possessed antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, gastrointestinal, anticancer, diuretic, anti-urolithiatic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, bronchodilation and antihistaminic effects.

5. Hepatoprotective Activity
Research has demonstrated the liver-protective properties of kusha grass extracts. The polyphenolic fraction of the plant roots has potent hepatoprotective action against tamoxifen-induced hepatic damage in rats. This suggests potential applications in protecting the liver from drug-induced toxicity and other hepatic disorders.

6. Diuretic Properties
Traditional claims about the diuretic effects of kusha grass have been scientifically investigated. Desmostachya bipinnata(Darbha) is enlisted among Trinapanchamoola, which is well-known as a diuretic and is individually enumerated in the Mootravirechaneeya Dashemani. Studies have shown moderate diuretic activity, though results require further research for statistical significance.

7. Bioactive Compounds
Scientific analysis has identified numerous bioactive compounds responsible for the therapeutic effects of kusha grass:
Previous studies resulted in the isolation of coumarins (scopoletin and umbelliferone), amino acids, carbohydrates, flavonoids like kaempferol, quercetin, quercetin-3-glucoside, trycin and trycin-7-glucoside, sterols, and terpenes.
The major compounds found in D. bipinnata are L-limonene, camphene, β-eudesmol, trycin-7-glucoside and trycin.

Recent research has explored the use of kusha grass in the green synthesis of nanoparticles for medical applications. Studies have successfully synthesized platinum nanoparticles using Desmostachya bipinnata extract, incorporated into mouthwash formulations, showing 70% reduction in biofilm formation and 60% plaque reduction within 2 hours of treatment.

Potential Benefits Requiring Further Research
While some traditional claims about kusha grass have been scientifically validated, certain properties mentioned in traditional sources require more rigorous clinical studies:
- Radiation Protection: Some sources mention that kusha grass has been observed to block X-ray radiation in recent medical research; however, peer-reviewed studies specifically validating this claim are currently limited.
- PCOS Management: Recent reviews suggest Desmostachya bipinnata shows promise for PCOS management due to its rich content of bioactive compounds, including quercetin, linoleic acid, stigmasterol, and terpenes, though additional clinical studies are required to validate its efficacy.
Safety Profile
Research on this plant has demonstrated that the isolated compounds are safe for human use. However, the non-toxic nature has been established through acute toxicity studies showing no significant effects on liver and kidney function when administered at therapeutic doses.
Scientific research has provided substantial evidence supporting several traditional uses of kusha grass (Desmostachya bipinnata).
