The sacred texts of Hinduism are traditionally divided into two main categories: Shruti (that which is heard/revealed) and Smriti (that which is remembered). Shruti texts include the four Vedas (Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda) and the Upanishads.
The Smriti texts include the Puranas, Itihasas (like Mahabharata and Ramayana), Dharma Shastras, and various philosophical treatises. These texts form a comprehensive framework of Hindu thought, practice, and philosophy.
Each category serves different purposes: Shruti texts contain eternal spiritual truths and principles, while Smriti texts provide historical context, moral guidelines, and practical applications of Vedic knowledge for different eras.
