Hindu dharma transcends simple categorizations of polytheism or monotheism. According to the Vedas and Upanishads, there is one supreme consciousness (Brahman) that manifests in various forms to help humans understand different aspects of divinity.
As explained in the Bhagavad Gita 10.8, 'I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me.' The different deities represent various functions and attributes of the one supreme reality.
This concept is further elaborated in the principle of ishta devata - allowing devotees to worship their chosen form of the divine while recognizing the underlying unity. Modern physics similarly recognizes that energy manifests in different forms while remaining fundamentally one.
