While cows are deeply respected in Hinduism, the notion that all Hindus universally worship cows as deities is oversimplified. According to the Atharvaveda [10.10], cows are considered symbols of abundance, life and motherly nurturing, not objects of worship themselves.

The historical reverence for cows stems from their practical importance in Vedic society - providing milk, fuel (dung), and agricultural labor. The Rigveda [6.28.1-8] describes cows as givers of sustenance and wealth, but does not mandate their worship. Different sampradayas (traditions) place varying emphasis on cow protection, from strict adherence to more flexible interpretations.
